8/1 No Surgery This Week

Yesterday was a long day for Thomas. The day was good - time off the vent and in the chair once more.  His fever was clear until 7pm tonight - when it came back, along with pain and anxiety attack.  Eventually, they got all of this under control, but it was a rough hour for him.  He has been dealing with a lot of secretions that have to be suctioned out of through trach and because of the frequency it's just getting really, really painful for him (he said it's like a needle being slid up and down his throat).  Secretions are a good thing, but because there is so much they started him on a patch behind his ear that supposedly helps dry things up - we sure hope so!

They met with the surgeon late last night, and surgery was scheduled for 7:30 am (Friday). They had to do a CTscan in the middle of the night to make sure the tissues surrounding his trach (which were infected) are clear of infection.  The surgery hinged on this!  (Between this, meeting with the surgeon, and all of Thomas' other routines and checks and tests, it was a sleepless night.)

Unfortunately, the CTscan showed oxygen and still a little fluid under his skin. The surgery is post-poned till after the weekend. Thomas is so disappointed and a little frustrated. Please pray for cheer and focus today, and for the continued clearing of this infection and improvement in his lungs.

  3. are there plans for psychological counseling? major, debilitating injuries like this often cause a lot of anger, depression and anxiety, feelings which need to be addressed and not pushed into the subconscious.

  4. Just had a feeling the surgery wouldn't be today. I'm sure it will happen in God's perfect timing. Praying for a restorative weekend for you, Thom and Natalie, and that the peace and comfort only the Holy Spirit can give will be yours. ~ Rosemary in Ohio

  5. I'm sorry to hear the infection has not cleared and surgery is delayed. My prayers continue for healing, consolation and strength. When you are ready, there are some excellent video resources on this website. http://www.facingdisability.com/videos/

  6. I will pray that you find a place of peace in your mind. I've had just a taste of what you're going through and it's terrible. Things that the Lord have in mind we don't have a clue. There is something that have helped in my life...Archbishop Fulton Sheen in "The Way to Happiness" says to "inscape" rather than try to "escape" a problem. This is also for pain. God Bless you Thom. Love from Rowena Mohr's Grandma Wendell.

  7. Hang in there, Thom. Much better to be well before surgery, though. Will pray that your trach heals fully and soon. Encouragement and blessing to Natalie as well.
