Reminder: We are on Day 4 of our Novena!
Thomas has had two good days. He enjoyed having his mom and
sisters in town for a visit and was in good spirits.
Occupational Therapy and
Physical Therapy teams have been working with him the last two days on exercises
to strengthen & stretch his hands, wrists, and elbows. When he is
ready to be out of bed again, he will need to be able to support himself on the
edge of the bed by extending out his hands and keeping his elbows taught - so they
are getting started now! And, as you may imagine, he is very very focused on any exercise for his hands ... being able to
type once again is one of his biggest goals.
Thomas had some
amazing sessions off the vent for 8 hours and 8.5 hours! He also used his
speaking valve for 10 minutes to talk to Natalie and his family.
And great news for today,
the team monitoring his infection gave his trach/neck the green light!
YAY! This information will be passed on to the Neurosurgery teamwho will determine when surgery can happen. A CTscan with contrast will be done on Sunday, just to be sure there are no signs of infection below the skin. We are hopeful surgery will happen next week! We will keep you posted.
Thank you for your prayers and continued support!

Thinking of you all, and praying for complete recovery! So sorry you are going through this trial, but so grateful that you have faith that is carrying you.
ReplyDeleteGreat news! Thank you for all the effort to keep us in the loop. Praying a special prayer daily, and also short prayers as the Holy Spirit brings Thomas to mind throughout the day. ~ Rosemary in Ohio
ReplyDeleteMy 65-year-old (or so) cousin fell off a room onto his back, shattering his spine in multiple places (neck down). First of all, he lived. After months of physical therapy, and now a year and some months later, he is back to teaching high school and getting around fine, if with some effort to keep his balance.
ReplyDeleteI'm encouraged by the progress you're making. I'm encouraged also by the wonders of God's extraordinary grace. You will continue to be in our prayers. Kind regards in Our Lord and Lady, Phil & Hannah
So glad Tom is doing so well. I'll keep praying for him!
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear the reports of progress and have some understanding of the effort involved in recovery. Will continue to offer prayers for you all. Was so very sorry to hear of the accident but we know that God is there with Natalie and Thom and your families with new and necessary graces for you each day. ~from St. Thomas Parish, in A2, Lea McNulty
ReplyDeleteExcellent!
ReplyDeletePerhaps Thom might want to consider a chorded computer keyboard when he regains more hand dexterity. A chorded keyboard uses a set of large keys to produce characters. Typing is exactly akin to playing chords on a piano. Persons of all abilities use chorded boards as chording reduces hand and wrist strain.
ReplyDeleteMany different models and styles exist. Some chorded boards are handheld, others stationary. Certainly please speak to Thom's team of medical professionals beforehand about this idea.
